Everything You Need to Know About
Portable DVD Players

By James

Most people think that DVD players are a thing of the past. Since the invention of the Blu Ray player and thanks to so many ways to stream movies, like Amazon Prime memberships, DVDs might not be talked about as much, but the market is still alive and well.

Most newer movies are still released on DVD, and people are still grabbing DVD players off the shelves like they are the latest thing every holiday season. One of the most popular options remains the portable DVD player.

How does it work?

A portable DVD player works just like a miniature version of a regular DVD player. You put the DVD into the slot on the portable DVD player and enjoy watching a movie. The screen is much smaller than a television, but they are still big enough to enjoy watching a movie. Most portable DVD players also come with a spot to plug in headphones so everyone in the room doesn’t have to hear the movie. Instead, you can relax in your own little world with your new movie.

Perfect for the car

Portable DVD players are a great option for people that are looking for a DVD player for the car. These are a nice option for people that do not want to install tv screens or DVD players into the headrest on their seat but still want the kids to be able to relax and watch a movie for a long drive. Simply pick one up and then bring it with you on long trips to keep the kids from fighting for hours on end.

Keep in mind that these do need to be plugged in or charged, so having an adaptor that will plug into the cigarette lighter is ideal. This can prevent meltdowns when a toddler’s movie shuts off in the middle because the device just died.

Perfect for the home

Some of these products are designed so that they can be used with a regular television or as a portable DVD player. They can go in the car with the kids, or they can be hooked up to the television so that you can all enjoy a family night of watching your favorite movies with your new DVD player.

Consider weight

Look at how much the product weighs before buying it. Most people assume that because these are portable that they will be lightweight, but that is not always the case. Some of them can be on the heavier side and feel more like a laptop, which is not always ideal. Instead, it can be more comfortable to pick up a light weight product. These are portable and shouldn’t feel like an inconvenience.

Waterproof

Waterproof is an option that you want to seriously consider if there is a chance that the product might get wet. For example, if it is going to be mounted underneath a sunroof, check out waterproof options. The seals around sunroofs are known for going bad, and you don’t want a leaky sunroof to ruin your DVD player overnight.

If this is for a toddler, waterproof is a great option. Toddlers are notorious for messes, and it can only take one mess to ruin a portable DVD player. This waterproof option is a great idea! It’s lightweight, and perfect for tiny hands.

If waterproof isn’t an option, make sure to get a warranty and double-check to see if that warranty covers spills.

Children’s portable DVD players

Speaking of toddlers, there are awesome portable DVD players that are designed specifically for little ones. Some of these are waterproof, but some of them are not so it’s important for parents to carefully read product descriptions and product reviews before buying one.
They are designed to be more durable so they might be a bit heavier, but they will not break if they are dropped one time. They are also designed to be easier to use, some don’t use remotes (so you won’t have to find that multiple times), and there are children’s DVD players available in the latest cartoons, like Paw Patrol. These usually come with a matching carrying case.

Colors

These devices come in a wide variety of colors. The basic black and silver ones are pretty popular, but there are so many other colors to choose from so you can get the little ones their favorite color.
Pick a pink one for your princess or a blue one for the boys. Character DVD players are also a great choice. Popular characters and cartoons, such as Barbie, are usually available.
There are also stickers and decals that are specifically designed to decorate electronics so the kids can truly personalize their new portable DVD player.

Screen size

Before picking out the perfect screen size, decide which type of portable DVD player you want. If you want a DVD player in the car, the screen size should match up perfectly with the size of the headrest on the seat. If it is too big, it will not fit properly. If it is too small, it can make the viewing experience less than pleasant.
If the portable DVD player is going to be the kind that is more like a laptop screen size is not as big of an issue, but there are a couple things to keep in mind. Parents that have smaller cars might want to opt for a small screen size so if the children move the DVD player it does not obstruct their view in the rear-view mirror. Parents should also keep in mind who is carrying the electronic. Tiny hands will have a harder time carrying that 13-inch screen (the largest screen size currently available with a portable DVD player.) In this case, a smaller size might work out better so that it does not get broken.
Other than that, customers can go as big or small as they like, and they shouldn’t have any issues.

Swivel screen

A swivel screen can make it easier for everyone sitting in the area to get a great view of what is playing. Siblings can sit on the couch and watch a movie without anyone complaining that they can’t see or bickering to get the spot in front of the screen. If the DVD player goes on road trips, parents can make sure that everyone in the backseat has a great view. Plus, kids can easily turn the screen to show parents something without having to move the entire DVD player (and taking a chance of dropping it.)
This is a great option if the DVD player is going to be shared, is not going to be mounted in the car, and is not going to be used as an addition to a home theater.

Battery life

Battery life is an important thing to research before buying one of these. The battery might only last an hour, and that’s not even long enough to finish an entire movie. Another common problem is that batteries will start off strong and then quickly need to be replaced. Before clicking the checkout button, research the particular brand and model that you are considering making sure that you are not likely to have battery problems in the future.

Accessories

It is important to consider what accessories you would like to have with your portable DVD player before buying one. Some DVD players are pretty basic and only have a slot to stick the DVD in and another jack for the power cord to charge the battery. This might be okay for some people, but most consumers will want a few more options than that.
Make sure that the electronic has a headphone jack. Most customers make the mistake of assuming that all portable DVD players come with one, but they might not. Double check to make sure that you don’t have to listen to cartoons for the entire ten-hour road trip with the little ones. If a product comes with a set of headphones, that is even better.
Some of these products also come with a slot for an SD card. This can be handy if you like to store media on an SD card, but it is not always necessary. Power cord length is another thing to consider before purchasing. Most portable DVD players will come with a power cord, but whether that power cord is long enough to go from the car seat to the cigarette lighter is a completely different matter. Measure the distance between where the DVD
player will more than likely be to the cigarette lighter, and then add a couple inches just to make sure. That is how long the power cord needs to be. If the product is going to be mounted in the car, double check to see if it comes with everything needed to install it in the car. If not, make sure to pick up the mounts so that you don’t have to order anything else before enjoying your new DVD player.
Most of these products are going to come with one or two accessories, but hardly any of them will have everything that a customer needs.

Protective case

A portable DVD player is designed to be just that: portable. One accidental fall and the entire screen can shatter making your new toy completely useless. Instead of trying to be extremely careful every time that you leave the house, save yourself the stress by purchasing a carrying case for it. These are available in a variety of sizes, styles and colors so that there is something for everyone, and your bank account will thank you when your new electronic lasts for years to come.

Microfiber cloths

If you’ve never cleaned a flat screen before, you might not know that you are better off using micro fiber clothes, but you are. These are lint free so that they will not leave those tiny pieces of fuzz on your screen, and they will not hurt the screen like rougher materials might.

Screen protector

Investing in a good screen protector is always a great idea. This can protect the screen from cracks if the product gets dropped, sticky finger prints on the screen and various other things. It can also be easier to clean the product. Instead of having to wipe down the screen repeatedly, families can simply clean the screen protector, let it dry, and then put it back on the portable DVD player.

Research

Before buying any product, it is important to do your research. Browse through the options above to see what is important to you. If screen size doesn’t matter, skip that option. If battery life does, make sure to double check product specifications to guarantee that it will last long enough to watch a movie or two. Product specifications can usually tell you a lot of useful information about the product.
After reading the product specifications, make sure to browse through some of the product reviews as well. Product reviews can tell you is someone else bought the product and it broke easily, if it was harder to mount the DVD player in the car than stated in the product description, or any other problems that you may run into. Make sure to read the product reviews that are from verified purchasers to get an accurate review from someone that definitely bought the product. Sometimes, companies will pay people to write fake reviews, so beware of reviews stating how great the product is if the person is not a verified purchaser.
After considering the options and doing your research, you can rest assured that you will wind up with the perfect portable DVD player to meet all of your needs, complete with accessories and everything that you need to take care of it.

"Buying these DVD screens made our vacation ride a lot more enjoyable. We also got headphones so our kids could listen to the movies and we could listen to the radio. It was money well spent. This was our first trip using them and we will be using them on all our long rides."
